Are you ready for Spring?

Are you tired of indoor recess? Are you tired of freezing temperatures?  I love how much reading I get done over winter yet I am really missing spending time outdoors.  I am ready for Spring!  I liked the day last week when the snow was melting and you could hear the drip, drip sound of ice becoming water. I miss the sunshine, bright and brilliant, shining as I leave Hansen for the day.

One exciting thing that is getting me through this last part of winter is 4 boxes of new boxes that arrived here in the library. I love new books almost as much as I love sunshine. Here are a few of the titles that I'm thrilled to add to our library:

Recess Warriors: New graphic novel series by Marcus Emerson, just the cover looks fun! We have #1 and #2 in already.

Spy School and Fun Jungle series: Two fun mystery series by Stuart Gibbs that lots of students have asked me for.

Itty Bitty Bios: easy biographies on many different people; Chloe Kim, Marian Anderson, Maya Angelou, Booker T. Washington, and Sacagewea are a few of the new titles.

Zach and Zoe Mystery series: Twins who solve mysteries with a sports twist written by Mike Lupica who has many older sports books.

Come check out all our new books here at Hansen library. And hopefully Spring is just around the corner.

Where did October go? Browse new books and find out...

The library has been a busy place through September and October.  We had a fantastic time creating many different dots in celebration of International Dot Day.  I'm still editing the video made from pictures of all our young artists.

We also ordered and received LOTS of new books into Hansen library.  It takes time to figure out which books will be just right choices for our library students.  Once we get the books in we have to program them into the Destiny, our online data base for library materials.  After they are in the system we have to bar code and label, cover and stamp them.  Find all new books on the metal beige cart at the front of the library.

Two word summaries, focus on nonfiction:

Tree of Wonder by Kate Messner:  Rainforest, ecosystem

Don't laugh at me by Steve Seskin (includes CD): bullying, self/esteem

Gravity by Jason Chin: space, illustrations

Redwoods by Jason Chin: biomes, forest

Lightship by Brian Floca: safety, ocean

Ivan, the remarkable true story of the shopping mall gorilla by K. Applegate: caring, animals

A passion for elephants by Toni Buzzeo: scientists, biomes

Sisters and brothers by Steve Jenkins: animal, relationships

T is for time by Marie and Roland Smith: concepts, history

How many ways can you catch a fly? by Steve Jenkins: animals, solutions

These covers look like more fun than your typical nonfiction books!  If your interest is sparked come have a look at our new books in the library.

Spring break Reading

It's just around the corner!  And whether you are traveling to somewhere or are staying home (a staycation) you need a good book to read!  We have lots of new titles in the library.

CFHS donated a whole new series to us, Pendragon by D.J. McHale and it has 10 books total which should keep many of you reading.

Stella by Starlight by Sharon M. Draper: Stella lives in the segregated South—in Bumblebee, North Carolina, to be exact about it. Some stores she can go into. Some stores she can’t. Some folks are right pleasant. Others are a lot less so. To Stella, it sort of evens out, and heck, the Klan hasn’t bothered them for years. But one late night, later than she should ever be up, much less wandering around outside, Stella and her little brother see something they’re never supposed to see, something that is the first flicker of change to come, unwelcome change by any stretch of the imagination. (amazon)

El Deafo by CeCe Bell: Starting at a new school is scary, even more so with a giant hearing aid strapped to your chest! At her old school, everyone in Cece's class was deaf. Here she is different. She is sure the kids are staring at the Phonic Ear, the powerful aid that will help her hear her teacher. Too bad it also seems certain to repel potential friends. (Good Reads) This is a graphic novel written by CeCe Bell, she is hearing-impaired herself just like the main character and she is married to Tom Angleberger of Origami Yoda fame!

If you are reading this by Trent Reedy:  Mike was seven when his father was killed in mysterious circumstances in Afghanistan. Eight years later, the family still hasn't recovered: Mike's mom is overworked and overprotective; his younger sister Mary feels no connection to the father she barely remembers; and in his quest to be "the man of the family," Mike knows he's missing out on everyday high school life.(scholastic) Trent served overseas in Afghanistan and has published several books dealing with the aftermath of war.

Rain, Reign by Ann M. Martin: Rose Howard has Asperger’s syndrome, and an obsession with homonyms (even her name is a homonym). She gave her dog Rain a name with two homonyms (Reign, Rein), which, according to Rose’s rules of homonyms, is very special. Rain was a lost dog Rose’s father brought home. Rose and Rain are practically inseparable. And they are often home alone, as Rose’s father spends most evenings at a bar, and doesn’t have much patience for his special-needs daughter.

Just as a storm hits town, Rain goes missing. Now Rose has to find her dog, even if it means leaving her routines and safe places to search. (Good Reads)

Steelheart (#1) and Firefight (#2) are two new fantasy/dystopian titles by Brandon Sanderson: Ten years ago, calamity came.  It was a burst in the sky that gave ordinary people extraordinary powers.  the awed public started calling them Epics.  Epics are no friends of man.  With incredible gifts came the desire to rule.  And to rule man, you must crush his will.  (cover flap)

New books!

{Just one small stack}

Friday morning four boxes of new books from Follett were to delivered to our library! We have new picture books, new nonfiction and new chapter books! They are all beautiful and I want to sit and just read them all. I'm will catalog them as fast as possible and then you will be able to check them out. If you want to just sneak a quick peek they are here in boxes ready to be gazed at by teachers or students. So far this one is my favorite in the picture book catagory; Superfab saves the day by Jean Leroy.
